History
Unlike the other cities in the U.S., the early settlers in New Braunfels weren’t English but German. Their influence is obvious in the city’s architecture and mixed culture. Plus, you’ll find traditional German cuisine served in a couple of restaurants and bars here.
This city was established by Prince Carl of Solms- Braunfels in 1845. He was the Commissioner General of the Adelsverein or the “Noblemen’s Society” (in English). This group was organized in attempts to build a new Germany in Texas.
This city was named after the Prince’s hometown, which is Solms-Braunfels, Germany. He was able to acquire two properties from Rafael Garza and Maria Antonio Veramendi Garza for $1,111.
Adelsverein set up hundreds of German people to move to Texas. As it grew both in population and economy, in 1850 this city became the fourth largest city in Texas with a population of 1,723. Currently, New Braunfels has a diverse racial makeup composed of whites, African American, Native American, Asians and others.
