History

In 1828, the South Carolina Canal and Railroad Company was founded. Its president and one of the foremost cotton merchants in South Carolina, William Aiken, hired renowned engineer Horatio Allen (who also constructed the Brooklyn Bridge) to construct a railroad from Charleston to Hamburg, SC, a location on the Savannah River. Work started in 1830, and the newly founded town of Aiken (named in tribute after the first railroad president) saw the arrival of the first train on October 2, 1833. In 1834, engineers C.O. Pascalis and Alfred Dexter designed Aiken with its spacious parkways and roads, and in 1835, the town was chartered.

After the war, Aiken was able to quickly recover, and in 1870, it started to draw rich Northerners who were attracted to the region by the equestrian sports opportunities, thereby establishing the town’s famous ‘Winter Colony’. Some of the people who wintered in Aiken include Thomas Hitchcock, who established (along with the Whitney’s) the for-public-use piece of property known as Hitchcock Woods.

The historical significance of this location is best understood by remembering the war-time need that was felt by the nation in 1949 when a nuclear weapon was detonated by the Soviet Union. The United States was stunned, and President Harry Truman opted to react to an apparent openly hostile action.

The Carolina Bay Nature Preserve has a vast array of wildlife. Currently, a growing assortment of birds can be seen there, including Mississippi Kites, Red Tail Hawks, Canadian Geese, and wood ducks. Other wildlife consists of squirrels, raccoons, turtles, frogs, and salamanders. Planted along the shore are blue-flowered Pickeral Weed and other plant life from the Savannah River Ecology Lab. These plants are distinctive of Carolina Bays, but got lost when the area was under development.
