History

East Greenwich was discovered by the General Assembly in 1677 in an effort to coagulate claims of land against those of Narrangansett Proprietors and Connecticut. The General Assembly allotted 5,000 acres of land and gave lots to inhabitants who will choose to settle in this area. The locals accepted the offer quickly, and the town’s rapid development helped delay the plans of Connecticut in shoving their boundary eastward. As a result, Rhode Island was the sole state town developed by a government act and not by commercial interests. The Narragansett Proprietors tried to stay in the land in north Wickford that extended beyond the East Greenwich land, but Sir Edmund Andros, a governor of Massachusetts and had the power to resolve the disagreement, ruled on the side of the existing settlement of East Greenwich.

The government had released the formerly reserved waterfront land in small lots in 18th century. Starting in the year 1711, the local government awarded the lots to anyone who is willing to pay 1 shilling and promise to construct a minimum-sized commercial structure. A village was developed by 1725 with a graveyard and schoolhouse, but the town’s citizens complained that going to meetings was hard because of its size, which then brought about the separation of West Greenwich in its own village in the year 1741. East Greenwich put up a courthouse when the town was named as the shire town of Kent County that was detached in 1750 from the Providence County.
