History
The community of Hendersonville got its charter as the City of Hendersonville from the General Assembly, and on January 7, 1847, it was official established as Henderson County’s county seat.
The original charter of Hendersonville set the commercial town limits to be ½ mile from the courthouse; however, it should not be further than Mud Creek. It is also stated in the charter that 5 officials were to be immediately elected as the town’s governing body. The 5 elected officials took the vow of office and assigned a town constable and magistrate. The constable acted as the chief of the city streets, city tax collector and city treasurer.
The first church placed inside the town limits was the Hendersonville First Baptist Church. Established in 1844, it was in the courthouse that the first services took place. The city leased the church a vacant land that was situated between Mud Creek, South Main Street and East Barnwell Street in 1848. A year later, the church constructed its first building and began the first graveyard inside the town limits. The graves were taken away in the 1920s in order for King Street to be extended all the way through South Main Street as it currently is.
