History
Cornelius was established in 1893 and incorporated on March 4, 1905. It is the 2nd youngest incorporated town (6 in total) in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. The origin of the town has been tracked down by numerous historians to a quarrel over cotton weighing.
During the late 19th century, two successful cotton companies situated in Davidson disputed on whether a sanctioned town cotton weigher ought to be select ed. After an intense election was held and a law was passed, one was employed, and the company that was against the appointment made a decision to transfer a great deal of its business just south of the town limits.
Often, after heavy rainfall, the road linking Cornelius and Davidson would become closed. The hill that leads to Davidson would become very muddy that a lot of cotton farmers realized that it was more convenient and safer to carry out their operations in a small frame structure just south of Davidson. The cotton buying industry’s success later encouraged the owners to build a cotton mill where raw cotton could be transformed into fabric. The cotton firm’s owners lack the required funds to open the mill; however, they knew someone who could provide the financial support. Joseph Benjamin Cornelius provided the needed money and the mill became a reality. Although J.B. Cornelius (the cotton mill’s primary stockholder) was not a Cornelius resident, the people recognized his important role and named the town after him.
