By 1917 the town had become a large logging and tanning area which also led to a prominent paper mill and thread company "American Thread and DuPont. Lifestyle and Things to Do

Brevard is situated in Transylvania County which is often referred to as the "Land of the Waterfalls" and is home to 250 natural wonders. The unique topography within the county invites visitors and residents to see some of the most awe -inspiring cascades. The most significant waterfall is the Whitewater Falls which features more than a 400 foot height making it the largest waterfall east of the Rockies.  With so many waterfalls within such a short distance of each other the area draws visitors from across the country.

In addition to the waterfalls Brevard and Transylvania County have become a Mecca for outdoor enthusiasts. Here you will find plenty to do in this natural playground as people come from all over for hiking, biking, camping and fly fishing.

The small town charm and great outdoor opportunities have also made Brevard a great place to retire attracting retirees from all over the Southeast. Brevard is filled with great art galleries, restaurants, one of a kind stores and one of the best soda fountains in the country.

You'll find plenty of golf, tennis and swimming opportunities and dozens of natural forest and parks filled with amazing walking trails, kayaking and canoeing locations. Wildlife enthusiasts are drawn to retire here as are many hunters and fisherman.

In addition to the many outdoor activities Brevard is widely known for its great festivals, Music Center, museums, historical sites, theatre and art culture.

A favorite and most unique event is the annual White Squirrel Festival which takes place the weekend before Memorial Day and features great food, live music and arts and crafts. Its history recognizes one of the town's most celebrated residents the "White Squirrel".  Which if folklore is true attributes this large population of these protected White Squirrels to a Carnival Event that took place in the mid 1800's where a small group of these unique species escaped into the local wildlife.
