History

After the mid-1750s, when tough Scotch-Irish colonists started to inhabit the area, the mountain passages from southern Virginia to Kentucky drew numerous settlers, farmers, trappers, and hunters who continued south to the North Carolina mountains. The Greenes were the first family to inhabit Blowing Rock.

Other first inhabitants of Blowing Rock consist of the Storie, Estes, Bolick, Coffey, and Hayes families. During the Civil War, North Carolina’s mountains usually witnessed violent guerilla combat between troops of pro-Union and pro-Confederate fighters. To protect their loved ones, Confederate army men frequently send their families to Blowing Rock, which turned into a place of safety from the warfare. After the war, a lot of these men joined their families and stayed in Blowing Rock. At the same time, people from the neighboring town of Lenoir would stay for the summer to savor the fresh, cool air and marvelous view of the mountain. On March 11, 1889, Blowing Rock was incorporated.

In the late 1800s, the tourist economy became the principal industry of Blowing Rock and was forced to adjust to accommodate the desires of tourists. The need for improved and cleaner roads (majority of trails then were just dirt roads) led to the streets and highways of the town to be paved. Another concern involved the need to construct fences to prevent the wandering of farm animals into town and bothering visitors. An ordinance was sanctioned by the town that required local farmers to put fences around their farms.
