History

The Native Americans settled in Chatham for no less than 10,000 years prior the French’s unsuccessful attempt to capture the town in 1606. The English acquired sections of land in 1656 from Native Americans and called it Monomoit. Because the population was not enough and the place had no minister, the name couldn’t be formally incorporated. When the number of inhabitants grew in number, Hugh Adams was chosen in 1711 as a resident minister. Soon, the town requested to be incorporated again and was acknowledged on June 11, 1712 on a condition that the name should be changed to Chatham.

Area and Climate

Chatham lies on the southeast end of Cape Cod, so if you’re picturing Cape Cod as a curved arm, Chatham will be at the elbow. Pleasant Bay is at the north, Atlantic Ocean is at the east, and Nantucket Sound is at the south. Harwich is the only neighboring town found at the west and north town line borders. Chatham’s main geographical characteristics include freshwater and salt ponds, harbors, wide-ranging pits and barrier beaches, wooded uplands, and a number of small estuaries.

It is not necessary to have an AC unit when you are here in Chatham because fans are enough to keep you cool during the summer, owing to the fact that the ocean breezes make things tolerable even if the cities in the northeast are scorching hot in August. During the autumn and Indian summer, Chatham is dry and bracing, plus the surroundings is at its finest with the most vibrant colors of the year. September and October months are still a good time to go for a swim, as it isn’t really cold for those who still take a dip to the ocean until Columbus Day.

Winter in Chatham has an average temperature of approximately 10 degrees warmer compared to the mainland. There is an occasional snow, but the majority of storms in New England passes by the town or simply brushes the surroundings with white stuff. People who happen to be in Chatham during winter can tell you that the paved roads are completely sanded and plowed.

It’s spring time in Chatham from March until May, with average temperatures of upper 30s to low 50s more often than not. The month of June is when you would see the sparkling waters of Pleasant Bay and the blooming of the town’s ever-popular roses and other flowers.
