History

Portland peninsula was initially known as Machigonne by Native Americans, the early inhabitants of the town. Portland was established in 1632 by the British as a fishing and trading colony. The business had become successful, and the waterfront of the town became a mecca for trading and shipping firms. The phoenix is a mythological bird that emerges from the ashes and suitably represents the town’s well-known rebirth following the great fire in 1866 that has leveled the area for the 4th time. Portland was almost fully reconstructed throughout the Victorian age and has preserved much of the flavor and architecture of the 19th century.

The redevelopment of the town’s working waterfront, reformed awareness and attention in exporting and the major fishing industry have revived the biggest metropolitan center of Maine. With endless consideration to preserve the landmark, the town has fruitfully incorporated the charm of the past into a contemporary and fresh urban setting.

Area and Climate

The town of Portland is the biggest city in Maine and also the state’s retail, business and financial capital. Cityscapes and seascapes merge agreeably in this town, suspended on a peninsula and overhanging into the Casco Bay. Portland is a vibrant, thriving city and the metropolitan center of the south coast area of the state, incorporating the olden days’ appeal into a fresh and new urban atmosphere. Its historic structural design mixes elegantly with the new ones as you take a walk along the city’s rebuilt Old Port section or the working waterfront.

The town is a relaxed and laid-back city with meticulous and gracious people. As a matter of fact, Portland was nationally ranked as among the 10 culturally most enthralling and safest cities in America and also among the top metropolises for doing business. Additionally, health care and schools are excellent in this town, plus the homes here are reasonably priced.

Portland has everything you need, from scenery to entertainment, recreation, and culture, and this is why millions of tourists never fail to visit this place every year.

Portland is northern New England’s cultural center, and its performing and visual arts match those of what the larger cities have. From the standard to cutting edge, the performing and visual arts are dazzlingly alive and fill the town with an amazing elegance. Portland has modern dance and ballet troupes, art museum, opera company, and symphony orchestra, and you will certainly be fascinated with what is being shown all year round. During summer, the music takes place outdoors and resonates down the harbor.
