History

The town of Bar Harbor has always been a place for outdoor activities, inspiration and relaxation. The Hudson Valley School artists, particularly Frederic Church and Thomas Cole, took a trip in the mid 1800s to Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island to paint landscapes and seascapes. Such paintings, then taken back to US cities, were very much welcomed, not to mention that the art supporters had shown their desire to catch a glimpse of those places illustrated in the paintings. In the beginning, the “rusticators” had gone on board with the locals; however, they yearned for more facilities, so it was very obvious that they called for various choices for accommodation.

Initially, the people who travelled to Bar Harbor for peace and inspiration were mainly writers, scholars, artists, and scientists. Having just a minor disruption brought about by the Civil War, more visitors had come to the rugged coastal village. Every so often, even the theater troupes visited the place, and concerts had taken place more frequently. Amidst some mockery, David Rodick widened their undersized lodging facility in 1875 by constructing Rodick House, which is the town’s biggest hotel during that period. It can have room for 275 guests. The town had 16 hotels by 1870, but at one point, room reservations were to be made 2 years ahead of time, so David Rodick decided to make an expansion again in 1881.

The old hotels were burned or torn down in 1947 by the great fire. A lot of cottages were burned as well; however, some of them remained. At present, a lot of these cottages are private dwellings, with some of them turned into bed and breakfasts, welcoming inns, and guest homes.

In addition, the town is home to Acadia National Park’s biggest parts, which include the highest point 25 miles of Eastern United States coastline, known as the Cadillac Mountain.

The town receives 50” of rain each year, which is higher than the US average of 37”. It receives 65” of snowfall yearly, which is also higher than what an average US city receives every year. Bar Harbor has 196 sunny days, with July having the highest temperature of about 78 degrees and January having the lowest temperature of 15 degrees.

Lifestyle and Things to Do

For lovers of culture, you will be glad to know that Bar Harbor has 2 music festivals that provide everything, from chamber music to string orchestras and jazz. The town also has several clubs and bars that host a variety of solo artists and bands that accomplish the musical blend. If you are seeking an improvisational comedy theater, this town surely won’t disappoint you. The art-deco theater features movies you will certainly enjoy watching, plus the scope of museums in this town contradicts its diminutive size. This is where you can learn the place’s Native American legacy, the “Gilded Age”, Acadia National Park’s natural wonder, the distinctive species and ecosystems of Gulf of Maine, and the award-winning microbrews. Furthermore, the town has shopping centers where you can buy your keepsakes, crafts, clothes, or accessories. Bar Harbor is known for its 8th oldest golf course in the United States that wraps itself between the coast and the mountains.
