History

The town of Galena was established in 1826. That same year, John Dowling House was constructed and still stands today in the city center and is open to tourists. Its population continued to increase as prospectors obtained funding to temporarily occupy and do lead mining on developed estate in the region. The daily newspaper Galena Gazette was established in 1834, and in 1838, the Galena Chamber of Commerce was founded. By 1841, Galena was chartered as a town.

The growth of Galena can also be contributed to its access to shipping from the Galena River, along the Mississippi River. By the mid 19th century, the town had the busiest harbor between St. Louis and St. Paul., usually having as many as 15 steamboats at a time berthed along Wall Street. There were 54,494,850 pounds of lead transported by Galena in 1845. During that time, Illinois Central Railroad’s Galena branch was finished linking the town to Freeport, IL. In addition, Galena had a population of 14,000. This development gave birth to several houses of worship with amazing architectures, gorgeous mansions and elegant houses that can now be seen along Prospect St. on Galena’s eastern side, dry goods stores, banks, and the full-service DeSoto House Hotel.

With the lead mining industry’s decline and the boom of the California Gold Rush, the town’s population also started to decline, and is currently at roughly 3,600. While a lot of people left, the heritage that remains is a town rich in history and architectural splendor.

Area and Climate

Galena is the biggest city and the county seat of Jo Daviess County, IL. The town is situated in the Driftless Zone, a region that was not enveloped by glaciers during the current ice ages. This region, which consists of Illinois’ far northwestern area, avoided glaciation, although most of state (almost to its southern point) was glaciated. Because it avoided glaciation, this region is renowned for its bluffs, hills, valleys, and huge exposed rock.

Galena experiences 35 inches of rainfall annually (U.S. median is 37), while snowfall is 32 inches per year (U.S. median is 25). In general, the town gets 190 sun-drenched days every year. The temperature in July is the lowest, at 10° F, while July is the highest, at approximately 84° F.

Real Estate and Cost of Living

As of 2011, the estimated average value of homes or condominiums in Galena is $139, 383 (in 2000, it was $95,100).
