History

Decatur is a small town located in Dekalb County, northwest Georgia. The town was named after United States Navy Commodore Stephen Decatur. It was built at the crossroads of two Native American trails: the Sandtown and the Shallowford. The Sandtown on the east side leads to Chattahoochee River at Utoy Creek while The Shallowford trails present day’s Clairmont Road and eventually crosses near Roswell.

Over the past few decades, this town has already achieved both local and international prestige as one of the progressive cities with first-class citizens. Despite this, Decatur still maintains its historical “small town” vibe, although being just a few miles away from Atlanta City.

Area and Climate

Decatur has a total land area of 4.27 square miles. It’s pretty close to downtown Atlanta via East Ponce and dual MARTA subway stations. What makes this place really interesting is its rich historical and cultural go-to places and other tourist attractions. In addition, visitors and residents can enjoy lots of fine restaurants and other entertainment areas. There is also a town center and a huge farmers market for shoppers. Quite a few state parks are located around the area. There, residents can enjoy some outdoor activities with their family.

As for the climate, Decatur experiences an average temperature of 60.20°F, quite lower than the average Georgia temperature of 62.30°F but much higher than the national average temperature which is 54.45°F. 

This town receives 55 inches of rain per year, much higher than the US average of 39. Snowfall is only 0 inches, which is relatively lower compared to the average US snowfall index of 26 inches per year.

On the average, this town enjoys 231 sunny days all throughout the year.  In the summer season, which usually starts in July, the temperature can go up to 92°F degrees while in January it can go down to 39°F. 

Real Estate and Cost of Living

The average cost of a house in Decatur is around $350,400 based on the 2010 - 2014 survey. This rate is much higher than the state average of $148,000 and is pretty much higher than the national average of $175,700. When it comes to monthly rental price, the average rent for a studio apartment in Decatur is $760. A one-bedroom apartment costs around $790. A two-bedroom apartments costs $920. A three-bedroom apartment costs $1,210 and a four-bedroom apartment costs $1480.

The median cost of living in Decatur is 142.90 with housing as the biggest factor in the cost of living difference.

The average household income of residents was $77,202 as of the 2010 – 2014 survey. 

Lifestyle and Activities

Decatur offers a variety of fun outdoor activities for residents and visitors alike. There’s the World of Coca Cola and Georgia Aquarium. In this small town, they’ll find a couple of historical sites and museums like Michael C. Carlos Museum, Wrens Nest House Museum and Fernbank Museum of Natural History.

Other famous historical attractions are the Old Dekalb County Courthouse found in Decatur Square, which features a small museum. There’s the MAK Historic District which is famous for its 20th-century American Craftsman-style houses which are often used in films. 

There are also a couple of state parks where people can relax and unwind. To mention a few there’s Winnona Park, Dearborn Park, Adair Park and Oakhurst Garden.

Decatur is also home to some of the best restaurants in town! Aside from the usual fast food chains, they’ll find a variety of restaurants that serve delectable cuisines from other countries. Some of the best must-eat restaurants in Atlanta are found here and they are the following: Café Lily, Revival, 7 Hens and Rezagarse. 

Bar-hoppers can visit the Brick Store Pub which serves a rich lineup of brews and great-tasting food. There’s also The Pinewood and Leon’s Full Service. These three, are the top-three must-try bars in Atlanta. Furthermore, they’ll find plenty of craft beer establishments here like the Wild Heaven Craft Beers, The Blue Tarp Brewing and the Three Taverns Brewery. 

Those who’d love to listen to some feel good music can head down to Eddie’s Attic. It’s a well-known music club founded by Eddie Owen back in 1992.
