 History

The San Juan Mountains was utilized by Ute Indians as a summer camp for centuries and was named in the 1700s by the Spanish voyagers. It attracted fortune seekers to the state of Colorado with images of gold and silver, and in mid-1870s, a tent camp was built in the valley underneath, and the Sheridan Mine was the pioneer in a series of local claims. The area was initially called Columbia, became a town in the year 1878, and then replace     d its name to Telluride.

The town flourished with the arrival of railroad in 1890, and a mixture of settlers who search for luck turned the town into a prospering community with a population of 5,000 residents. Success abounded, and the town was filled with exciting possibilities. However, when the price of silver collapsed in 1893 after the First World War, the mining boom fell into pieces. Miners left, and Telluride’s population slowly diminished from thousands to hundreds.

The town reinvented itself in the 1970s, and a different type of gold, the well-known powder, was mined. In 1972, the time when Telluride Ski Resort was opened, the community’s atmosphere changed and spun back to high gear. Apart from skiing, performing arts, festivals, cultural events and music were founded and sprang through the seasons. At present, Telluride is known for its breathtaking ambiance and first-class skiing.

Area and Climate

Telluride is the country seat and most populated town of San Miguel County located in the southwestern part of Colorado. It lies in a box canyon, with cliffs and steep forested mountains surrounding it. The old mining operations’ several weathered ruins dot the hillsides, and a gondola connects the town with Mountain Village, its companion town, at the base of the ski area. The community and the surrounding place have been prominently featured in pop culture and are the subject of numerous famous songs. Telluride is known for its ski slopes and ski resort during the winter season and also for its wide-ranging festival schedule throughout summer.

The town gets 23” of rain every year (lower than the US average of 37) and 170” of snowfall (higher than the US city average of 25). Natchez typically has 242 sunny days every year, with July having the highest temperature and January having the lowest temperature.
