History
The first occupants of this area were the San Dieguitos, they are the early Holocene inhabitants of Southern California along with the surrounding parts of the Southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico.
In 1886, a farmer named George H. Jones together with his family, settled in this land. They were the first people who lived here. A few years later, with the construction of the Lake Hodges Dam, this town developed rapidly. From that time until 1923 this town was called Lockwood Mesa before it was later changed into Solana Beach.
In 1923, a man named Colonel Ed Fletcher bought 140 acres of land from farmer Jones for the price of $20 per acre. These properties were the foundation of the present-day Solana Beach. He, along with his brother-in-law Eugene Batchelder were the ones who further developed this town until finally in 1986, this community was officially incorporated as a city.

Area and Lifestyle
Solana Beach can be a rather great alternative to the horse-filled Rancho Santa Fe or to the not-so-pleasant city of Del Mar. Here, you’ll find the same, gorgeous beaches minus the crowd. So you’ll have plenty more opportunities to enjoy and try out some water sports like surfing, swimming, kayaking and stand up paddle boarding.
In addition, at Fletcher Cove Beach Park, you can bring your kids to have fun at the playground while you and your friends are having a picnic nearby.
In this cozy beach town, you’ll find a few amazing restaurants like the Lockwood Table Café which serves coffee and tea along with your all-time favorite breakfast and brunch fare. There’s also Solana Beach Crush, a classy restaurant that offers Italian dishes and brick-oven pizzas with a twist.
Let’s not forget the local favorite Pizza Port. It’s the perfect place to drink craft beers while enjoying a slice of delicious pizza. It’s really famous with families, tourists, beer drinkers and surfers.
Those who’d like to go shopping for some local souvenirs or organic products can head down to Solana Beach’s Sunday Beach Farmers Market. There you can buy the freshest, farm-to-table fruits and vegetables plus other locally made crafts and delicacies.
