History

Before San Clemente was colonized by Spaniards, the Juaneno natives inhabited the area. Long revered by passing settlers and explorers, it stayed practically unpopulated until 1776, when Father Junipero Serra established Mission San Juan Capistrano, which led to both Spanish and Indian settlers to build communities close by. After Mission San Juan Capistrano was founded, the local people were recruited to work for the mission.

The land’s property rights swapped hands a few times, but only some dared to construct on it until 1925, when Ole Hanson, ex-Mayor of Seattle, with the financial support of an organization led by Hamilton Cotton, bought and designed a village (2,000 acres in size). He believed that the nice weather, fertile soil and gorgeous beaches of San Clemente would serve as a retreat for people of California who were fed up with the metropolis.

Hanson imagined it as a coastal resort town with Spanish flair. In a surprising action, he added a clause to the titles obliging all structural plans to be presented to an architectural evaluation board in an attempt to make sure that future development would retain certain Spanish-style influence. For several years, it was a requirement that all new structures in downtown have red tile roofing.

Hanson was successful in marketing the new region and selling estates to interested buyers. The town was to comprise of structures constructed in the traditional Spanish design with red tile roofing. He constructed buildings, like San Clemente Plaza (currently called Max Berg Plaza Park, which were soon after donated to the town), the community center, the beach club, and the pier. It was on February 27, 1928 that San Clemente was officially incorporated with a council-manager government.
