Folsom started as a small community of gold-miners seeking to achieve greater wealth from the Sierra Nevada foothills. Back then, it was known as “Granite City”. It was later changed to “Folsom” in honor of Joseph Libbey Folsom who died in 1855. He was the one who purchased the property of Rio de Los Americanos from the heirs of William Alexander Leidesdorff, a businessman from San Francisco. This includes the whole estate where Folsom is now standing.

Folsom is also home to Sacramento’s biggest private employer, Intel.

Area and Lifestyle

If you’re a person who enjoys learning about history and culture, then you’ll probably have the best time in Folsom. The popular Folsom Historic District will take you back to the time when this place was still a gold-mining town. Here, you’ll find the Folsom History Museum, Pioneer Village and The Folsom Railroad Museum.

You can also check out some great art galleries and watch some performances at the live theater. Once you’re done with your historical tour, you can head down to some antique shops and clothing stores for some afternoon shopping and souvenirs.

Thanks to the Folsom Historic Sutter Street Revitalization, this modern town still gives off a feeling of the old mining town it was once famous for.

Of course, when you’re hungry, there’s a bunch of great restaurants here that serves breakfast, lunch, dinner and desserts. One of which is the Chicago Fire which serves Italian and American fare. There’s also Visconti Ristorante and Sutter Street Steakhouse.

The Fat Rabbit Public House is an awesome British pub which offers traditional English pub grubs.  Taqueria on Sutter St. is another local favorite. Here, you can order a plate of delicious, crunchy tortillas and nachos.

What makes Folsom even better is that it’s only 20 miles away from Sacramento. A modern town that’s full of history and culture is what Folsom is all about.
